Consumers Educated on Fire Safety this Christmas

Members of the public have been shown how to minimise the likelihood of having to make a home insurance claim as the result of a fire through the use of a new tool.Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service has launched an animated game which allows people to highlight different areas of a family home during the festive period and identify potential hazards.Among the threats are Christmas cards and stockings on the fireplace, decorations over electric lamps and overloaded plug sockets, the Scotsman reports.Nicole Carter, corporate communications manager for the service tells the publication: “This is a fun time of year and we wanted to show people how to be safer this Christmas and help them enjoy themselves in the process.”Meanwhile, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association recently warned people to not display their presents in their windows as this could tempt unscrupulous individuals to break in.While real Christmas trees may have the festive smell and authentic look that their synthetic counterparts can only dream of, they could also result in the need to make a home insurance claim, it has been suggested.Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service tells the News and Star that it can take just 49 seconds for a dry, real Christmas tree to consume an entire room with flames. As such, people have been advised to be extra vigilant in the run-up to Christmas to ensure their properties remain safe.
