Bluff Early to Win More

In poker tournaments, the highly skilled players are often unwilling to take decisive action in the beginning. They act uninterested and unconcerned with the actions of the unskilled online poker players who swarm the beginning ranks of a tournament. What these comatose players do not realize, however, is that these beginning rounds are actually the best time in the whole poker online tournament to try out some of their favorite strategies. For example, the early rounds of a tournament are the absolute best time to bluff. The first rounds of the tournament are great for bluffing because the beginning ranks are filled with players downright eager to play. Often these enthusiastic players want the chance to mimic their favorite poker stars or play poker just like they saw on television. They will not pass up the opportunity to play their cards, which means that they will rarely fold. The dogged ones that hold on to the final table rarely know how to play well, so a semi-bluff will almost always succeed. The beginning rounds of a tournament are a golden opportunity to bluff your way to success. If you give up this amazing chance to improve your chip stack with limited effort, you may end up regretting your decision.

Playing at the Pub: Poker in the UK

There is nothing better than relaxing with a pint at your local pub. Pubs are instantly relaxing, comfortable, and an excellent escape from the toils of everyday life. For British online poker players, the pub can pose a conundrum. The pub is great, but what do you do if you want to relax with a pint AND an exciting game of poker. Luckily for all you British poker players out there, recent laws have changed the gambling rules in pubs. The sum of all this new legislation is that your local pub is now technically able to host a poker game with money in play. So if you and your mates like to hang out at the pub, you can add a poker game to your normal evening out. The one catch if you want to play poker at the pub is that you have to be the one to initiate the game. You have to ask your local barkeep if they would be willing to host the game, not the other way around. Individual pubs also reserve the right to not allow poker or other forms of gambling in their establishment. This isn’t a big hitch for dedicated poker players, but beginners out there may forget that they can combine a pint and poker.

Younger Males Add to the Table Game Revenue for Casinos

A recent study of Pennsylvania poker gamblers has shown that the casino owners have been right all along. A younger more masculine group of clientele will show up if you start adding poker table games to the mix, namely texas hold’em poker. The Pennsylvania study is a sort of microcosm of the gambling world at large. The findings showed the differences in demographics between those that play slots and video poker and those that play table games like craps, blackjack, poker, and roulette. With a sample size just over 1000, over 46% of people surveyed had claimed to have gambled in some form in the past 12 months. The interesting correlations come when they did gender analysis. Of the men in the survey, 53% were shown to have participated, compard to only 40% of the women. They also did a racial analysis. 48% of whites answered yes to gambling, while only 32% of blacks. Another interesting find is that more affluent people gambled more than their poorer counter parts. With 51% of affluent families (considered 35k annual income by the survey) gambled while only 43% in poorer households admitted to it. So basically, white, affluent, males are the target market for poker gambling as far as table games are concerned. Specifically those in the younger crowd who was shown to be more pulled toward table games. The older groups, were still pulled toward the electronic machines like slots and video poker according to the survey.

Stealing in Short Period Tournaments

There’s a pretty major difference to the way major large-scale poker tournaments such as the World Series of Poker operate in their blind periods and the ones more commonly offered online or in a casino. The main difference, and the element that makes these smaller scale poker tournaments a much different beast, is the length of the periods between increase in blinds. In these shorter scale tournaments, then, there’s a lot of thievery and blind milking that can go on in the name of finessing those short periods, rather than interpreting them as a force against you. It becomes more and more important as the blinds increase that you get in there and steal your fair share of the offerings, regardless of the cards you are dealt. The strategy I often employ is to raise to 3x the big blind when it is folded around and I am on the button, or one or two seats off the button. Stealing from two seats off the button can be an underrated as a place to steal from, as it’s a bit less expected, and tends to get more respect. If another online poker player comes in before me, I will fold off the button, or just call on the button if the price and the odds are strong, and hope to hit my hand or maybe try to steal if the action on the flop allows. If I am called, I am very careful about committing chips against aggression unless I make a strong hand.

This general perspectiveavoiding aggression unless you are the aggressor, or have the cardscan be a good method for making it deep into more tournaments than trying to get involved in winning every hand.

The Ultimate Lantern Wedding Package

Here at the Wish Lantern headquarters, we’ve been having a tremendously busy week. We seem to have boxes of ten and five lanterns flying out of our ears, but most strikingly the brides- to- be are getting in on the act in their hoards. Some have opted for simply buying large quantities of Lanterns- between 50-100- whereas others have been seduced by our beautiful wish lantern wedding package. Now this gives me an opportunity to discuss said package with you. It is an absolutely wonderful idea for a wedding. Rather than the regular lanterns we supply, you get customised, personalised inserts courtesy of talented designer Claire Lovie, which have the name of the bride and groom as well as the date of the forthcoming marriage printed on. Then, on top of these you get wish tags upon which your guests can write their wishes of goodwill for the happy couple. Isn’t that lovely? The boxes which the lanterns arrive on your doorstep in are also a vast improvement on the regular brown storage boxes used for our other orders. You also get some lovely white branded lighters with our company number and website printed on, so you never forget us. And- yes there’s more- there are highlighters too, so you can write directly onto your lanterns. What a lovely little package!

Bluffing at the Check in Poker

Poker players can check, bet, raise or fold. A check is indicative that the player does not have a good hand, or at least, that’s what the checker wants the other players to think. Poker is one place where appearances can, and are often meant to, deceive.

Is it ever a good idea to bluff after there has been checking in front of you? The key here is to remember that deceptive players who use the check to slow play and deceive will make bluffing disastrously costly. If you have no read on the players, then bluffing out a raise after a check is risky business. In this situation, a minimum value bet might be best if you are on a semi-bluff with a hand that might improve.

Never take a check in front of you for granted, unless you are very familiar with thepoker player’s style. Don’t accept actions at face value. Betting is what allows you to gain information. A small value bet can chase away the pretenders. When a checker calls the minimum bet, you have to assume that the player is holding something worthwhile. It could be calling to a draw, or it could be a bluff too. Tread carefully after each check and don’t fall into the trap of deception.

Poker Strategy – Raising in the Big Blind

Often when playing online poker, you don’t see many people raise in the big blind.

Now of course there’s a reason for that; a raise from the big blind sets off alarm bells to all the other players at the table, or at least the good ones. A raise from the big blind is not common, and often signals a big hand.

So while there’s no reason to do it often, it still seems surprising that it happens rarely when playing online poker, or at least when I’m playing online poker. You often see people just call from the big blind when they end up having a big hand; while I can understand the strategy of trying to entice more people into the hand so you get paid off, the fact remains poker is still a game of luck and the more people involved in the hand lessen your chances of winning. And you’ll be kicking yourself if you limp in with that big hand and lose to a 3-10.

Consequently, even if you have a middling hand, a raise from the big blind if often enough to get a few limping callers to throw their hands away and take down a nice little pot before the flop.

Either way, there is something to be said for a strategic raise from the big blind every now and again, so consider doing it when the time is right.
