Multilevel Marketing, commonly called MLM, Network Marketing or direct sales is one of the highest potential income sources anywhere, but particularly on the Internet. It has been claimed that in the last 10 years more people have become millionaires through MLM’s than in any other business or profession.

I don’t know how true that is, but I do know a lot of people have made a lot of money through MLM’s.

Multilevel Marketing is also known as Pyramid Schemes and a number of other less-than-complimentary names. This is unfortunate because MLM’s have a lot of potential.

There are some things you need to know about an MLM before you join one though:

* You need to be selling something. It can be selling a product or a service, but it must be selling. If all the MLM does is recruit new members, then it is what is called a “Ponzi Scheme” and it’s illegal.

* They have to have a good product. You can send all the traffic in the world to an MLM website, but if the product they are offering has no appeal, it won’t sell no matter what you do. If it doesn’t sell, you won’t make any money. Simple as that.

* They have to have “staying power.” That is, they have to be good enough to last for a long time. Many MLM’s are gone in a year or two and no matter how well they were paying you, once they’ve folded, you won’t get any more money.

* Plan on working at it for a long time to realize any significant income. MLM’s don’t usually build quickly, so you have to be very persistent. Once they do start to build though the growth is exponential and the income unlimited.

You have probably heard of some MLM companies, and maybe you’ve even been a member of one or more of them. Odds are, if you were a member, you dropped out after a while because it was just too hard to promote these systems successfully.

One of the worst parts of promoting MLM’s is the rejection you will face. Try to think of this differently. I like to think of myself as the miner prospecting for gold during the gold rush. I sift through tonnes of dirt to find my one or two pieces of gold. All I am doing is prospecting, the more ‘dirt’ I can sift through the closer I am to finding my ‘gold’.

If you have done the research on your MLM company then you will have chosen one with a product that has an attraction to a mass market so you are not limited to one demographic of the community. Look at the economic environment, what are the trends or ‘boom’ industries?
Research has shown that health, weight management and anti-ageing are some of the fastest growing industries worldwide. – A huge market is starting to unfold as the ‘baby boomer’ generation ages and increasingly becomes more concerned with staying healthy and youthful.

If nothing else, being involved with an MLM company can teach you business and personal skills that can be used in any walk of life. Most MLM companies are very proactive in the area of personal development and from my experience it is this that is the key to a persons success with an MLM business – and maybe in life generally. Taking a close look at ourselves is one of the hardest things to do. We can blame multilevel marketing, the company, the products or even the weather for our demise but lack of personal development would definitely be one of the main causes.

Are MLMs Ethical?
Many people question the ethics of MLM. They claim that the people on the top get all the benefit from the people working below them while the people below don’t get much if anything at all. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Think about where you work. Isn’t it true that the boss is getting paid out of the money YOU are making for the company? And what about the Chairman of the Board? What is he producing that makes him so valuable to the company? Did he make any sales? Did he build any of the products? No, YOU did, but he’s raking in the big bucks for it.

With an honest MLM, you can easily make more than the boss if you put the effort into it. He gets a little bit from your sales, but you get the lion’s share – not like a conventional job where you sweat on the assembly line while the CEO sits in an air-conditioned office getting million-dollar bonuses!

But isn’t this just a big “pyramid scheme”? Yes and no. Anyone who works a conventional job is in a pyramid scheme. Every company, army, and government in the world is built on the pyramid concept. However, with multilevel marketing, you aren’t held back by the people above you like you are in a conventional job.

With an MLM, you can build your business as large and as profitable as you want it to be.

search. Due diligence applies, as the data at some sites can
be outdated or inaccurate. The sites below are good bets, but
the list is by no means inclusive.

PACER

Public Access to Court Electronic Records is a government site
that provides electronic access to case and docket information
from Federal Appellate, District and Bankruptcy courts, and
from the U.S. PartyCase Index. Most of PACER’s records are
available on the Internet, but a few must be dialed directly
via communication software and a modem. Most jurisdictions
offer toll-free numbers for modem dialing.

PACER provides an array of information, including a listing of
all parties involved in a case, compilations of case related
information, dates of events recorded in a case record, a
claims registry and more. Criminal court records are not
available through PACER.

PACER registration is free, but a service fee applies.
Effective 2005, Web searches are levied at a rate of eight
cents per search page, including pages telling you there are
no results. Dial up PACER systems charge sixty cents per
minute. You pay nothing until you accrue over $10 in a
calendar year. Accumulated fees of under $10 are erased at
years end.

U.S. Search

This highly rated search site uses patented technology to
access billions of public records. Search categories include
private investigative services, criminal records searches,
background searches, financial services, home and family, real
estate reports, business searches and court records.

To expand upon just a few of the uses you might make of this
site, you could find out if a home contractor has liens,
judgments and bankruptcies before contracting with him or her.
You could do a background check on a child care provider
before trusting your children to his or her care. You could
find your old military buddies, locate your lost sweetheart,
find out if Cousin Bruno is out of prison yet, look up the
status of a civil lawsuit filed against your former boss —
and various other tidbits of information. Additionally, you
can search your own public records to help protect yourself
against identity theft.

To protect individuals from identify theft, U.S. Search does
not provide social security numbers, date of birth, credit
history, and employment records, nor to they offer bank
account information or other private financial information.

U.S. Search is a fee-based site. Searches range from about $3
to $300, depending on the complexity of the search that you
choose.

Search Systems

Search Systems aims to be the Internet’s primary source for
free public records. Site access is free, although some of the
linked sites may charge a user fee. Yahoo Internet Life and
PCWorld magazines rated this site as among the most useful on
the Web.

Search Systems categorizes its links by nation, state, and
international databases. You can search for adoption records,
birth, death and marriage records, campaign contributions,
copyright and trademark information, foreclosures, and a
seemingly endless list of other documents.

Public Record Finder.com

Public Record Finder is another directory with multiple links
to web sites offering public record searches. Since no fees
apply, the site is financed through advertising revenues. The
owners do not guarantee the accuracy of records found at the
linked sites and do not provide assistance to those who cannot
find the information they want. Nevertheless, their link
selection is worth checking out.

Yahoo Real Estate

In addition to the usual searches for listings, real estate
agents, etc., you can also run a search of thousands of real
estate documents to learn the prices that buyers are paying in
your neighborhood. According to site information, this sales
data lets you analyze the value of your home or other homes.
The results include price, square footage, bedrooms and the
year built (if available). The School Search tool gives you
information about schools in a specified neighborhood.

GPO Access

“The U.S. Government Printing Office disseminates official
information from all three branches of the Federal
Government,” says the Web site, adding that their mission is
to keep America informed. The site provides electronic access
to documents from a number of government branches, agencies
and databanks. For example, you can access Congressional
reports and records, public and private laws, Federal laws,
Presidential documents, and other related materials.

Additionally, the GPO makes publications from three levels of
government available for free public use in Federal depository
libraries throughout the United States. The Access site
contains links to the libraries and in some cases, to their
collections.

EDGAR

Operated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the
Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system
(EDGAR) is an online database containing registration
statements, periodic reports and other forms filed by foreign
and domestic companies. Companies are required by law to
submit these records, which you can access and download free
of charge. If you’re considering buying shares in a company,
you might want to check out the compulsory annual report on
Form 10-K or 10-KSB, which contains much of the same
information as the annual report issued to shareholders.

Electronic Reading Room

Courtesy of the IRS, the Electronic Reading Room makes an
array of public records available for download. The Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) requires the IRS (and other government
agencies) to make certain documents publicly available. The
IRS records include final opinions made in case adjudication,
statements of policy and interpretation not published in the
Public Register, administrative manuals, copies of records
previously released under the FOIA and others.

Local Public Sites

Lastly, check your local public web sites if you’re looking
for information specific to your city, county or state.

If you’re a first-time advertiser on a limited budget, start small and test the results. Begin, for example, with an in-column ad, where you can include some copy and spot color. Then track the response by asking your new customers how they found out about your business or by listing a special discount in the ad. If the in-column listing delivers, move up to a display ad.

When you advertise in the Yellow Pages you need to remember that you’re cheek by jowl with competitors. Your ad has to be strong and eye-catching. Consider some of the ways you can make your ad stand out and get results:

Size and placement. Go for the largest ad you can afford. Bigger ads attract more customers and get better placement. Placement can be even more important than size, especially in a crowded category. Find out if a bigger ad will move you much closer to the front of the category, or if you can cut back a bit in size without losing much in the way of placement.

Headline. Use a strong headline that trumpets a key feature of your business. Highlight something that grabs attention and distinguishes you from competitors: “Largest Selection of Bathroom Fixtures,” “Huge Savings on Office Supplies,” “Only Computer-Repair Shop on the West Side,” or “Fast Emergency Plumbing Service.” Don’t use the name of your business as a headline unless it happens to make a strong selling statement, like 24-Hour Locksmiths.

Copy. Research indicates that copy-heavy ads draw more customers by about two to one. But be careful: Don’t pack in so much copy that your ad is hard to read. List key selling points and all the information potential customers might need, including the following:

* A brief but complete rundown of your products or services, and any specialties

* Your credentials, including years in business, licenses, certifications, awards and professional or industry-association memberships

* Special services, such as pickup or delivery, free estimates, evening or weekend hours, same-day service, money-back guarantees, senior discounts or free parking

* Basic information, such as service area, location (with directions and perhaps a map), business hours, brand names available, credit cards accepted and your phone number in large, bold type

Graphics. Design your ad with enough white space to prevent clutter. Consider an illustration or photo, but keep it simple. Use color to add impact, but if your ad budget dictates choosing between color and a larger ad, go for size.

Categories. If your business fits in two categories but you can afford only one ad, pick the category where the largest number of your competitors advertise. You’ll be vying harder for attention, but the busy category has obviously proven to be the most effective for your type of business.

Not long ago, I attended a mastermind group. During the meeting, one of the women went into a litany about how terrible things had been in the past few weeks and how depressed she felt as a result. Inspired, I rose from my seat and told her, “You’re not depressed, you’ve just been having a lousy conversation with yourself.” She looked at me as if I had just arrived from Mars.

LIMITING WORDS CREATE A LIMITED LIFE

Most people have no idea that the words they use affect their feelings, experiences and behavior. The majority of people in our lives use very limiting language. If you were to listen to most of the people around you, you would be shocked to find out how negative their speech is. They complain, gossip, talk about how difficult things are now and how they probably won’t get much better. Then they wonder why their lives are not filled with joy and success. While it might seem like a good idea to regularly talk about things that bother you, you pay a huge price for doing so.

When you use negative words, whether knowingly or unknowingly, it impacts your feelings and behavior. When my friend talked about how depressed she felt, it actually contributed to her feeling sad and, as a result, she began to act as if she had no choices. Notice the sequence – words create feelings and feelings impact behavior. It is almost impossible to act positively when you use negative words. (Note – The phrase depressed as it is used above is NOT describing clinical depression. Prolonged feelings of sadness and hopelessness can be symptoms of a serious condition that needs the attention of a mental health professional.)

Your words impact your present experience and also your future. If you use limiting words, you will act in a corresponding manner because we always act the way we describe ourselves. I am a motivational and high content speaker. For years, I yearned to be more humorous and entertaining in my talks. However, using humor was a very big challenge for me. Why? Because I always described myself as motivational, not funny. So what happened? My audience members would comment about how motivational and inspirational I was. They never told me that I was funny. I finally decided that if I was going to be able to add humor to my talks, I had to stop saying that I wasn’t funny. I decided to be open to being more entertaining. The result? Over time I easily incorporated one liners and humorous content into my talks. People began to describe my style as motivational and highly entertaining. Amazingly, a number of audience members told me that I missed my calling and should have been a stand-up comic instead of a speaker. What happened; did I suddenly discover a funny bone? No. By stopping my negative words, I was able to let my natural wit emerge. (I still don’t have them rolling in the aisles, but at least my audiences and I have more fun.)

NOTICE YOUR ‘YUK’ FEELINGS

The first step in discontinuing your negative words (whether you say them to yourself or others) is to recognize when you are doing this. Here’s a clue. It’s what I call my ‘yuk’ feeling. Whenever I say something negative or limiting, I feel a negative sensation in my body. For me, it can be a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach or stress down my spine. When I feel that awful feeling in my body, it is a clue that I am engaging in negative language.

Why does this happen? Most people know that the mind and body are inextricably linked. One affects the other. The words that we use also register in our bodies. If we use positive, upbeat words it allows our bodies to feel empowered, energetic, and ready to take action. If we use negative words, it causes stress or a “yuk’ feeling somewhere in our bodies. Determine where your ‘yuk’ feeling is. When you are experiencing a challenging situation, notice where you feel it in your body. Does your ‘yuk’ feeling express as a clenched jaw, tight muscles at the back of your neck, pressure at your temples or somewhere else?

DARE TO DEFY YOUR INNER CRITIC

Once you’ve determined that you are in a ‘yuk’ state, then pay attention to your language. You might be shocked at the negative things you have been saying to yourself and others. No wonder you’ve been feeling so stressed! However, just noticing these words is not enough. Remember, negative words affect your feelings and behavior so you must start to challenge them. Instead of telling yourself that you are overloaded and can’t possibly do all the work you have to do say, “Stop it!” You must quiet the inner critic. Tell yourself that, of course you will get everything done, because you always complete whatever you need to do. When you do this, pay attention to the ‘yuk’ feeling and notice that it has disappeared.

DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO BE

One of the reasons that highly successful people are so outstanding at what they do is because they consistently use positive language. Again, optimistic words create positive feelings and actions. These accomplished individuals describe their lives and experiences in affirmative terms which causes them to behave in ways that lead to success.

The good news is that it is not that difficult to transform your words and behavior. Recently, I was having lunch at a professional meeting. I began talking to one of my table companions about exercising and having the motivation to continue a regular program. She told me that she used to be a regular fitness enthusiast, but she let it slide and now she couldn’t get motivated to work out on a regular schedule. After speaking with her for a while, I told her that if she didn’t stop saying that she wasn’t motivated to exercise, she never would be motivated to start and maintain a fitness program. I told her that if she wanted to make a change, she had to get rid of the negative way she was describing herself with regard to exercising. I also told her that awareness is the first step to making a positive change. Being aware of the negative language that we use, challenging it, and describing what we want instead, will allow us to take control of our feelings and behavior. A week later, my associate sent me a note and told me that I ‘motivated’ her so much, she got up at 5 AM to go to the gym and had been doing it several days in a row. She also told me that it was easy and she did not know why she hadn’t done it before. The reason it became so easy for her to change her behavior and do what she wanted to do was because she changed her negative language. When she used positive words, she did not need me to motivate her, she motivated herself.

So the next time you catch yourself saying something like, “I’m so depressed” or “I’m sick and tired of this,” stop it. Your words no longer have to mess up your life. Choose words that describe what you want to experience and watch what happens.
